I've noodled around with synthesizers and other musical toys for much of my adult life. I once created a synth-in-a-box that I called the 'gizmo'. It was based on an RPi running fluidsynth, and had no purpose other than to generate Hammond Organ noises.
But in order to explain it's use to it's intended users, I created a presentation about MIDI. Much is specific to the gizmo, and to the intended MIDI keyboard, but there's also much that is perfectly general, and the experience of matching up the capabilities of the gizmo with those of the keyboard may be illuminating.
