Basic Terminology
- MIDI instrument – a device that can actually make sounds when it gets a MIDI message.
- MIDI controller – a device that can send MIDI messages.
- MIDI message – a instruction from the controller that tells the instrument what to do, which is either to do with actually playing a note, or controlling what sounds are made when you play a note. There are several different types of message.
- MIDI channel – a way of controlling which MIDI instrument(s) will respond to a particular MIDI message. It’s really just a number embedded in a message.
